การเรียนรู้เพื่อเดาความ หมายของคำที่เราไม่รู้ เป็นทักษะที่สำคัญ เพื่อไม่ต้องค้นหาคำทุกคำจากพจนานุกรม เราสามารถเรียนรู้ที่จะเดาความหมายจากคำจากประโยคได้
ในการค้นหาความหมายของคำเพื่อเดาความหมายของคำที่บอกเป็นนัยจากบริบท

มีขั้นตอนดังต่อไปนี้

1. อ่านประโยคทั้งหมด
2. ขีดเส้นใต้ความหมายของคำบอกเป็นนัย
3. หาความหมายจากส่วนต่าง ๆ ของคำ
4. Root (รากคำ) อาจจะบอกคำดั้งเดิม
5. Prefix (ส่วนนำหน้าคำ) อาจจะบอกนัยของความหมาย
6. Suffix (ส่วนท้ายคำ) อาจจะช่วยให้หาความหมายในส่วนของประโยค
7. แยกชนิดของคำ เช่น คำนาม คำกริยา คำคุณศัพท์ คำวิเศษณ์ เป็นต้น
8. แทนที่ด้วยคำอื่นที่ให้ความหมายในประโยค
9.ตรวจสอบว่าคำตอบที่ใกล้เคียง

Root, Prefix and Suffix (รากคำ, ส่วนนำหน้าคำ และส่วนท้ายคำ)

        คำในภาษาอังกฤษมีส่วนประกอบอยู่ 3 ส่วนคือคือรากคำ, ส่วนนำหน้าคำ และส่วนท้าย
รากคำ คือส่วนที่แสดงความหมายของคำและเป็นส่วนประกอบพื้นฐานของคำ
ส่วนนำหน้าคำ คือส่วนที่อยู่หน้ารากคำ และทำให้ความหมายของคำเปลี่ยนไป หรือเปลี่ยนเป็นคำใหม่
ส่วนท้ายคำ คือส่วนที่อยู่หลังรากคำ ส่วนท้ายคำเปลี่ยนความหมายของคำและหน้าที่ของคำ
ส่วนนำหน้าคำและส่วนท้ายคำ เรียกว่า affix (คำเติม)

หาความหมายของคำว่า slithered โดยใช้การวิเคราะห์.

1. stopped moving
หยุดการเคลื่อนไหว

ผิด ในประโยคกล่าวว่าผ่านหญ้า ผ่านหมายถึงมีการเคลื่อนไหว
NCORRECT: the sentence above says THROUGH the grass. 'Through' means there is some movement.

2. slept in the grass
นอนหลับในสนามหญ้า

ผิด ในประโยคบอกว่ามันกำลังล่าเหยื่อ งูไม่นอนขณะล่าเหยื่อ
INCORRECT: the sentence above says he is hunting. Snakes don't sleep when they hunt.

4. moved or traveled

CORRECT ANSWER: the sentence above says THROUGH the grass. 'Through' means that there is movement.
